Health & Social Care, & Child Development

IMAGE0080Health & Social Care is a popular and successful department at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich and is taught in both Key Stage 4 and 5. As a department, good progression is made by students with many choosing to continue their studies with us and move on to university thereafter.

The department has an ethos of providing practical learning opportunities. We are well resourced, with a dedicated team of qualified and experienced teachers who provide a caring and supportive student-centered approach. To add to this, we have a fully equipped health suite and ICT facility.

Key Stage 4 students study the OCR Cambridge Nationals in Health and Social Care and Sixth form students study the OCR CTEC Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care at Key Stage 5.

Child Development

The Cambridge National in Child Development Level 2 course covers all aspects of child development and parental responsibility, from conception to five years. Students develop the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.

The qualification has one examined unit and two moderated units:

Unit R059: Understand the development of a child from one to five years

(Centre-assessed tasks, OCR moderated)

In this unit students will learn the expected developmental norms for children from one to five years. They will use observation and research techniques and skills to investigate these development norms and explore their findings. They will also learn the importance of creating plans and providing different play activities to support children in their development.

Unit R058: Create a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children from birth to five years

(Centre-assessed tasks, OCR moderated)

In this unit, students will learn how to create a safe environment for children from birth to five years in childcare settings. They will investigate and choose equipment that is both suitable and safe for use and will learn about the nutrition and dietary needs of children from birth to five years old.

Unit R057: Health and well-being for child development

(Written paper, OCR set and marked)

In this unit students will learn about the importance of both pre-conception health and creating conditions in which a child can thrive, including the prevention and management of childhood illnesses and creating a safe environment.
