Could you be a parent governor?
There is now a vacancy for a parent governor on the governing body at Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich. This is a voluntary, unpaid post but will give you a great opportunity to both support and challenge the academy.
This can be a very rewarding experience for a parent who wants to support their child's school and work with it to develop further.
What does it involve?
As a parent governor, you will need to attend at least one meeting per term (some meetings are day time and some are evenings) and you'll also be invited to a number of other school events to support the academy.
You'll need to get to know the Ofsted framework in full and understand the academy's Self-Evaluation (SEF) and action plan. Governors are expected to shape and contribute to this.
They are expected to know what the key actions and priorities of the academy are, to support these and monitor progress towards them. Their role is strategic rather than involving daily oversight.
Each governor is linked to a key area of the academy and is expected to do a termly visit to this area, holding it fully to account and supporting it; they are then expected to give a termly verbal report back to the full governing body meeting of their visit.
Paperwork is sent out in advance of the meeting and governors are expected to have read it and to come to the meetings with questions and comments.
"Yes, I'm interested in becoming a parent governor..."
If you are interested in becoming a parent governor and would like to know more please email Peter Mason, Clerk to the Governing Body, on p.mason@harrisdulwichgirls.org.uk before 21 December 2012. He will also be pleased to answer any questions you might have.
Everyone interested in the role will be invited to discuss the position further in the new year. There will then be a vote to determine who takes up the role. The new parent governor will serve for three years.
