Students make memory sculptures
27 March 2014
Local artist Jolyon Dupuy has been working with students to create sculptures that will be displayed at the Artists' Open House event that takes place each year as part of the Dulwich Festival in May.
"Students created two really interesting sculptures based on childhood, memory and family," said head of art Clare Stanhope. Thirteen students took part, bringing in objects from their childhood and photographs of themselves as young children.
Both sculptures will be transported to Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich, which will open as part of the Artists' Open House event in May.
The Amazing Tree
"One of the sculptures we called The Amazing Tree and the other Bits and Pieces, said Jolyon Dupuy. "The social interaction was amazing to listen to and behold. There was much use of a glue gun whilst I attached some difficult objects, and we completed everything in just four hours.
"We discussed the process and the sense of achievement, which is very important, as well as the nature of sentimentality and the power of objects to touch our personal histories. The teacher then asked them to write down a few words about the experience. I was blown away by their kindness, open-mindedness and goodwill - definitely a revelatory experience that I shall carry for many years."
