Oxford College Trip for Gifted and Talented Students
Harris Experience facilitated a trip to Oxford for Gifted and Talented students in year 10 to attend a taster day and tour a couple of colleges.
The day started with an introductory talk explaining what Oxford University was looking for in applicantss. They dispelled various myths including that you need all A* grades at GCSE.
They also revealed that they don’t look for ‘well rounded individuals’ but rather academic excellence, so extra-curricular activities might be a nice addition to your supporting statement, however they are not mandatory or even necessary.
There was then a lecture by an Oxford University Oncology Professor who gave the students a taste of what a research team does and the global significance of the work that comes out of the university.
Lunch was in a very grand dining hall and was followed by a tour of Mansfield College. Students were taken around by a current undergraduate who even showed them their halls of residence, which gave them a real sense of collegiate life.
Before heading home we visited Brasenose College and took another tour; it was a beautiful day and HGAED girls couldn’t have had a more idyllic view of Oxford life with students lounging on the lawns of the quads and even a game of croquet being played!
