Clinical psychologist helps Psychology Students
Dr Pamela Jacobsen, Clinical Psychologist and KCL Research Fellow, came to speak to the Year 10 GCSE Psychology class recently about a career in Clinical Psychology and her area of specialism, schizophrenia.
The students were captivated in what she had to say and it was particularly valuable in educating all of us in the specific challenges and stigmas that those suffering with mental health issues, face on a daily basis.
What students said
Here's what some of the students had to say:
Shawite Ahmed:
Today, we had a Clinical Psychologist come in to class, from Kings College London. Dr Pamela Jacobsen gave a very insightful account into some of the research currently going on. I really enjoyed the session and am now more likely to pursue Psychology at A-level.
Shahanaz Ahmed:
Today we met Dr Jacobsen who is a Clinical Psychologist. She gave us lots of very interesting and useful information . The information that she gave us makes me feel that I definitely want to have a career in Psychology. I loved how she made the session so interactive and kept us very engaged throughout.
Veronica Gonzalez:
Having Dr Jacobsen speak to us about Clinical Psychology and the ways of treating patients really proved to us that the many stigmas involved around mental health are in fact, inaccurate. Her experiences allowed me to empathise with diagnosed patients and view their circumstances from a much more subjective level. I particularly remember Dr Jacobsen saying that her job is not to tell people how to live their lives by giving direct advice, but to help them arrive at these conclusions for themselves, which changed my whole perception on this career.
Chenoray Edwards:
A Clinical Psychologist, named Dr Jacobsen came in to talk to my Psychology class about her profession and the general topic of mental health. I found this talk very beneficial as I am now aware of the necessary qualifications to work in the field of Psychology. I have also gathered a deeper understanding into mental health issues such as Schizophrenia and depression. As a result, I fell I would now be more tolerant and empathetic when encountering those with mental health difficulties.
Cheyane Brown:
Today, Dr Jacobsen came to speak to the Year 10 Psychology GCSE class. It was fantastic! We learnt a lot about Psychologists, Schizophrenia and the stigmas behind it. I think Dr Jacobsen is a very patient and empathetic character and I am glad she came to speak to our class.
Esther Olotu:
I really enjoyed meeting the Clinical Psychologist, Dr Jacobsen because she really do and how I am able to get into doing Psychology. Additionally, I really enjoyed knowing what Schizophrenia is really like and the effects of having it and how it can't really be cured, but people can be supported in living with it.
Khadijah Khanom:
Having Dr Jacobsen come and visit our class was inspirational and enlightening. Dr Jacobsen explained clearly what she does as a Clinical Psychologist as well as a researcher. The experience was especially beneficial for me as I would like to pursue a career within Psychology and having Dr Jacobsen come in and explain how to get to where I would like to be in the future. She also broke down and made it clear how people suffer from mental health issues are not violent or dangerous but just need to be understood and listened to.
