Students Reach Final of 'Count On Us'' Maths Tournament
Five keen maths students in years 8 and 9 attended the 'Count on Us' maths tournament heats at City Hall this week to compete against 42 other schools around London.
Count on Us is a unique, pan-London inter-school maths tournament delivered in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation. The tournament includes nearly 3,000 students, with 240 students participating in the heats yesterday.
Our team of five girls worked extremely hard under pressure with timed activities and in front of an audience too. They did incredibly well and came second out of twelve schools which got them through to the finals in July!
Topics covered included geometry, number and algebra. The Challenge is designed to support the new National Curriculum which foregrounds fluency, reasoning mathematically and solving problems.
The heats took place in an impressive setting on the top floor of City Hall, with panoramic views of central London. Students were performing numerous rounds of solving number and fraction combination problems fast. They had to reason algebraically to compare and solve statements to complete a London-themed problem solving task. Finally, they developed their geometric reasoning skills by solving problems based on classic shape puzzles in unfamiliar formats.
The highest score in the entire tournament of 42 schools was 203 and we achieved a fantastic 182. The girls should be so proud of themselves, they worked as a team brilliantly and didn't give up despite some really tricky maths solving problems. Overall a really enjoyable afternoon, to be repeated in July!
Well done to these students:
