Maths Challenge Success - 2nd out of 42 Schools
Harris Girls’ achieved second place in the finals of the Count On Us maths tournament at City Hall, beating 41 other schools across London.
Count on Us is a unique, pan-London inter-school maths tournament delivered in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation.
The tournament included almost 3,000 students, including our five mad-keen mathematicians!
Number and fraction problems
The finals took place on Thursday 30 June in an impressive setting on the top floor of City Hall, with panoramic views of Central London.
Students had to solve numerous number and fraction problems fast.
They had to reason algebraically to compare and solve statements to complete a London-themed problem-solving task. Finally, they developed their geometric reasoning skills by solving problems based on classic shape puzzles in unfamiliar formats.
Our team of five girls came second in the whole competition which was an incredible achievement. They worked extremely hard under pressure with timed activities and in front of an audience too. The girls should be so proud of themselves for working as a team and not giving up despite some really tricky maths solving problems.
Well done to these students:
- Juying
- Leneshia
- Zaneshia
- Qausarat
- Shefa
The focus on Mathematics ensures key areas of geometry, number and algebra are covered. The challenge is designed to support the new National Curriculum which foregrounds fluency, reasoning mathematically and solving problems.
