Holocaust survivor Janine Webber meets students
Leah Guy from Year 9 reports on a visit from Holocaust survivor, Janine Webber.
When Janine Webber came to tell us her inspirational story we thought it wouldn’t be that bad. But as she went into depth, we were given an insight to the horrors perpetrated to her during WW2.
However, not all were so mean and a family kept her and her brother in hiding, but this turned out to only be a temporary solution. The family’s daughter gave away their whereabouts and brought a Nazi soldier to the house. He let Janine go but cold-heartedly murdered her 7 year old brother. This caused Janine’s heart to be heavy and she continually questioned why her life was spared but decided God had a reason.
The traumatic experience of her mother’s death from typhus and the thought of her aunt 'abandoning' her, gave her little consolation throughout the war years but there was a glimmer of hope. Little did she know but her aunt would return for her in 1946 and would continue to care for her. Every now and again, Janine goes to France to visit her aunt.
She has fought the feeling to keep her story to herself and visits various school around the country to inspire students like us. Surprisingly, she feels no hatred towards those who were cruel to her but rather disappointed. We hope she continues to share her emotional story as it shows that we can overcome the odds no matter what.
