Royal Court Brings Powerful Play to HGAED
In February, the Royal Court Theatre brought Charlene James’ play Cuttin’ It to HGAED. Preceded by a workshop, the show addressed the issues around female genital mutilation (FGM).
Told by just two female actors, the plot takes the audience on a journey from Somalia through to South East London unveiling the traditional thinking and circumstances that keeps the practice alive. It was a moving and informative production that engaged all members of the audience.
The Q&A that followed the performance was revealing; students were vocal in their condemnation of FGM and any other form of abuse. They were particularly fierce in their support of the rights of women. One more example of the power of theatre to promote thought and change.
