Year 10 Photographers Inspired By Gallery Visits
The first stop was the Victoria and Albert Museum to visit the current photography exhibition Real and Strange, which explores photography’s power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Although the exhibition was interesting, the museum itself is incredible and so we also spent some time wandering around the plaster court and the jewellery display. For lunch we walked up to Hyde Park to eat in the shade before heading to see the Serpentine Pavilion, this year designed by Thester Gates and explore the exhibitions at the Serpentine gallery.
Having now two gallery spaces, we first ventured into the strange worlds of Dominque Gonzalez-Foerster where we were invited to imagine possible encounters with alien life. Part of the experience entailed using a virtual reality head set which challenged the students to think about the possibilities of art and photography beyond the frame of the usual photographic rectangle.
In the second gallery space such questions continued with the exhibition Back to Earth, where the fragility of the earth was brought to our attention through various means. The most interesting was through smell researcher Sissel Tolaas whose work infused the gallery with various smells changing throughout the day.
What was really wonderful on this trip was bumping into one of our past students, Jamila, now in her third year of a graphic design course at university, who was working at the Serpentine Gallery. A very proud moment for all of us. Unfortunately, in the excitement we forgot to take any photos!
