PSHE Education - What Students Are Learning This Half Term

The focus for Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education this half term has been on health and wellbeing.

All students started the term with sessions on what PSHE was and why it was important, as well as establishing a set of ground rules, decided and agreed by each coaching class.

All students were also introduced to the concept of self-regulation and the role it plays in their lives, as well as being given tips about how to regulate when experiencing big emotions.

HAGED083In Year 7, students have been discussing resilience and considering what can impact their wellbeing, as well as developing strategies to help deal with negative comments or judgements.

Year 8 students have been exploring the consequences of nicotine, caffeine and alcohol addiction as well as learning about the differences between prescribed medicine, over the counter drugs and illegal drugs.

In Year 9, students have been learning the difference between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviours and the appropriate times to display these. They have also been discussing “group think” and peer pressure in relation to illegal substances and gangs.

Our Year 10 students were identifying stigmas and myths surrounding mental health as well as discussing the difference between healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms and how to reframe negative thinking traps.

In Year 11, students have been considering how to set good study routines and habits. They have considered their targets and aspirations for Year 11, learnt effective revision methods and considered how to identify and manage moments of stress.

For Post 16, the PSHE focus has been ‘living in the wider world’. Our Year 12 students have been working on effective ways to research and take notes and developing the skills needed to present effectively. In Year 13, students have been learning about their rights with regards to employment; they have learned about the role of trade unions, discussed how and when to challenge authority in the workplace as well as the best way to ask for a raise.
