Year 10 Geography Fieldwork Trip to Whitstable
This half term Year 10 spent a day outside the classroom with their ranging poles, tape measures and clinometers investigating and collecting data to determine if longshore drift occurs in Whitstable.
Bringing geomorphic processes to life, the students were able to investigate the levels of sediment being deposited on the beach to work out from which direction sediment was moving along the coast. To do this, students measured the gradient of the beach and the groyne drop comparing east and west sides to find out if the sediment was the same height.
Students also discovered the direction of longshore drift by throwing an orange into the sea and, under timed conditions, measured the direction and how far it flowed. Not all the data collection went smoothly! Students discovered that it was challenging to be accurate which means that their results may not be as reliable as they first thought.
