Art auction raises over £1,000 for charity
An auction of the best pieces from our GCSE and A Level students has raised over £1,000 for good causes. In total, the 124 lots have raised £2,135 so far, with proceeds split equally between the artists and selected charities.
This equisite charcoal drawing of a ballerina (left) by Asmana Matraimova, for example, was bought for £110 by Sir Harry Solomon. While a ceramic fruit sculpture (pictured below) by Fatmata Kamara fetched a massive £100.
Lord Harris himself bought two abstract portraits by Germaine Mutesa, while a number of pictures were bought by staff from the city firm, Memery Crystal.
Profits from the auction were split equally between the artists and the Academy's social enterprise company, HOPE, which supports two charitable causes: the Evelina Children's Heart Organisation and the Nabiswa village community in south east Uganda.
"It is important to us that our students understand how the professional art community operates and also understand that art can be a professional route for them to follow," said Principal Jane Fletcher. "The auction is just one of the ways we can teach students about the importance of global citizenship and social responsibility."
Chloe McFarlane also created an installation made from pebbles and sweets entitled Resourceful (pictured below), in response to a trip she made to Uganda trip as part of our partnership with the community in Nabiswa. The work was not for sale but made a stunning impression outside the sale room.
This is the second year running we've run an art auction for GCSE and A Level students and we'd like to thank everyone who made the event such a success. We look forward to seeing you again in 2014.
