Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony
The Jack Petchey awards ceremony took place on 10 June 2014. This prestigious event took place at the Purcell Room on The Southbank.
Harris Girls Academy was one of 15 schools representing Southwark. Students across the borough were nominated for a variety of reasons, from improving in behaviour to sports leadership.
Each school was welcomed onto the stage to receive a medal, acknowledged by Cllr. Sunil Chopra, The Mayor of Southwark. A massive well done to our award winners listed below.
September. Oyinkansola Balogun. The Chill Zone offers sessions after school for students to socialise and integrate. Also trying real world experiences. Oyin has been a great support in the Chill Zone. She regularly helps out in activities such as hairdressing and manicures. She is professional and reliable and a pleasure to have around.
October. Jamilla Dauda. This young lady is an amazing addition to the school. From day one we knew she has a passion for sport. Jamilla stays after school practically every day to take part in sports activities. Last term we had a basketball coach in from 7.15am on Monday mornings and Jamilla was always there and on time. Although a seedling, Jamilla is also in the handball team and we are sure she will maintain a great position in the squad. What a fine example of a committed reliable young lady – with exceptional manners to boot!
November. Halima Turey. The handball team required a winger for the Nationals Finals and although Halima wasn’t a regular player she had the talent to fill the spot. She played with maturity and flair and was part of the winning Nationals team. So much so, she was noticed by the England squad and scouts and attended trails for England’s U18 squad. A real talent!
January. Remi Banjo. Excellent compositions for her GCSE music units, and her tenacity and resilience in being determined to achieve to her highest and fullest potential.
February. Iyunade Raji. In her GCSEs this year she achieved a 85% average across all four of her units. She has also shown dedication throughout the year attending revision sessions, maintaining a high attendance and completing all homework set. Iyunade has also volunteered to help out at the prospective year seven parent’s evenings where she helped and welcomed prospective students.
March. Sandra Adjei. Sandra has been dedicated to Drama as long as she’s been at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich. Sometimes people think they know what young women who like drama are like: loud, demonstrative, the centre of attention. But actually, you need a good deal of maturity, dedication and introspection to be a good actor or dramatist. Sandra has these latter qualities in spades.
April. Leanna Flavian. Leanna took to handball like a duck to water. She is a natural. She has great team spirit and a powerful shot that scares most keepers. Her passion for sport is evident, she is tactical and methodical and does let anyone stand in her way. Leanna represented the school and Southwark in the Nationals and was instrumental in them winning. Although this year she had to retire, as she is in year 11 her contribution could not go unmentioned.
May. Ruth Sandi. Excellent success in her GCSE music exam obtaining an A grade. Also for her formidable contribution to the academy.
June. Natasha Smith. I would like to nominate Natasha Smith (Year 12). Natasha is not only hard working and an absolute delight but she also helps others and is eager to get involved in all aspects of the Health and Social Care course and departmental projects. Natasha has actively sought out relevant work experience and has supported less able students to meet deadlines. She is always on time and rarely has time off. I can rely on Natasha to be responsible and to represent my department well during volunteering opportunities that she engages in.
