Product Design students visit Innocent smoothie HQ
11 July 2014
A group of 20 Product Design students from Year 9 recently visited the Innocent Drinks Towers where they enjoyed first-hand experience of the day-to-day running of the company, writes Kerry Stephenson.
After a quick tour and a brief history of the company, students were taken to one of the many board rooms where plenty of ice cold smoothies awaited them.
Designing a smoothie label
Whilst they all reinvigorated their palate with a refreshing smoothie, it was here that they were given their first task of designing a label for a smoothie bottle.
This was actually a job for members of the company’s creative writing team. Students were surprised yet excited to hear about this as they too have been doing similar work in class.
Within minutes students began to 'think like a ceative writer/designer’, using the criteria given and prior knowledge from lessons learnt in the classroom to aid their sketches and relevant labelling information.
Making the smoothies
After a short break, students were ushered to one of two test kitchens. This is the actual kitchen where all the smoothies now on sale were developed and tested.
Working in teams and with only 25 minutes to finish, they were each given a role to play from picking fruit combinations, calculating the amount of each, making the smoothie, tasting the smoothie and naming and designing a label for the smoothie.
Naming the smoothie bikes!
The final task was naming the company’s smoothie bike. Lots of great ideas were revealed but the chosen names were: ‘Brakefast’, the idea of Hope, Kainat and Kamila; and ‘Fruitcycle’, devised by Demi, Marian and Fatima.
