An unforgettable day at St Thomas' Hospital
12 July 2014
Year 9 GCSE Health and Social Care students attended a training course at St Thomas’ Hospital recently to gain an insight into the work of a hospital, says Aiann Hassan.
Students had hands-on experience at the hospital's simulation and interactive learning centre. Here's what they wrote about it. It's safe to say the girls will never forget this amazing day out at St. Thomas' Hospital!

“The trip to St Thomas’ Hospital was amazing! It gave us an opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the medical profession. One of the activities I really enjoyed was the mini surgery we performed. During the surgery, I had to dress up as a surgeon and performed an operation on a human-like dummy. It was incredible, as the dummy even spoke to us. Apart from just having a lot of fun, I was also able to develop my communication skills as I had to communicate with my group members at all times. In the future, I would like to carry out work experience to further my knowledge of the medical profession. This trip has definitely reinforced my desire to work in the medical profession. “
Katie Baksh writes:
“The trip gave us an opportunity to learn about the different roles within the medical profession as well as giving us hands-on experience. The trip inspired me to work in the medical profession and to become a surgeon. I would love to go back there. My favourite element of this trip was when I won an award for performing the best CPR. “

“We were given opportunities to perform 'surgery', CPR, and take blood tests with a real injection. It was amazing! This trip was definitely my favourite trip. I would love to go back! My favourite section of this trip was the sexual health session, as I was able to advise a young lady about sexual health problems. This allowed me to empathise with her and understand the problems she was facing.”
Hayley Iveson writes:
“I now for sure want to work in the medical profession. I learnt so much from this experience. The most memorable part of this trip was performing the mini surgery. I also enjoyed the sexual heath session as I had an opportunity to advise a young lady about sexually transmitted diseases and the trauma associated with being raped. However, my favourite part of the trip was winning first prize for my effort and enthusiasm throughout the entire day.”
