Debate Mate launched
On Tuesday 4 November, the Harris Girls 2014 Debate team was invited to Westminster to attend the launch event for Debate Mate 2014 - which will give students 16 weeks of after-school debate workshops and competitions.
As we arrived, the auditorium was filled with students from across London taking part in various games and fun activities such as the Mexican wave. The students were shown inspirational clips from famous debaters from around the world to demonstrate how debating can improve various interpersonal skills and change the world.
Live debate: Should bullies be named and shamed?
Once the students had settled, the team hosted a live debate to demonstrate how a structured debate works. The team included previous European champions and also last year’s ‘Debate Mate’ winners. The motion for that debate was ‘should bullies by named and shamed’. One of our students Zameelah Muhammad was chosen from the crowd to put a question forward to the panel.
Overall the students had an amazing time and were so inspired by the event they spent the whole journey home, creating their own debates about various current affairs. Stay posted for updates on the Debate Teams progress during the national competition.
