Boris Johnson hosts Black History Month event for students
16 October 2014
A selected group of students attended a Black History Month event at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Boris Johnson.
The event focused on the unique contribution from black communities and ethnic minorities during WW1. The evening began with a ‘meet and greet’ session with other schools from across London. The students then had a chance to meet the Mayor himself and had a brief talk about their expectations for the event.
Once the discussion had begun, one of our students Remy Banjo was given the opportunity to ask a question to the panel. She raised the following question: “In an area as culturally diverse as London, do you feel we should also celebrate a wider range of ethnic minorities?”
The panel responded well and the question sparked a debate amongst the audience about the presence of Black British figures within the national curriculum.
Overall, the students thoroughly enjoyed the event and the topics discussed enabled them to look into different perspectives of WW1.
