Othello: A Trip to Make You Green with Envy
Students from years 8 and 10 were selected to see a production of Othello at the Globe theatre on London’s Bankside Monday the 2nd and 9th of March.
We were lucky enough to have a dry day for both performances even if the cold was hard to escape in the open-air theatre.
The show was specially adapted for schools which meant it was fast-paced, with lots of audience participation and action.
First World War
The play was transported to the First World War with combat scenes made all the more thrilling by actors zip-lining from the upper galleries straight in to the yard!
Othello was portrayed as an army officer from the West Indies, which paralleled the references to him as a Moor in the original text and the theme of Race throughout the play.
Iago was vividly scheming and held the audience’s attention brilliantly every time he came on stage.
Mrs Campbell remarked that the on-stage chemistry between Othello and Desdemona was very authentic!
Authentic
The audience was like an authentic Shakespearean audience, with woops and wails for the lovers as well as shouts of ‘’Liar!’’ when Iago’s deception becomes clear.
A punchy production which enhanced the Bard’s brilliance.
