New Harris Wing officially opens
Lord Adonis, former Minister for Schools, opened our new Harris Wing today and praised the progress being made at the academy, which is now in the top 2% of schools nationally for student progress.
The new wing provides a state-of-the-art home for our English, Maths, ICT, Business Studies and Design and Technology departments, as well as a large study centre for independent learning.
Designed by HLP architects, the new wing adjoins the recently refurbished New Block, with its media suite, languages classrooms and radio studio.
‘Buildings don’t teach anyone, it’s what goes on in the building that counts, and this academy has fantastic teachers and motivated students, as well as first class facilities to match,' said Lord Adonis at the opening ceremony attended by students and dignitaries, including Lord and Lady Harris.
‘We have high expectations of our students and that merits quality facilities,’ said Principal Jane Fletcher. ‘We tell our students all the time just how much they can achieve and having facilities like this helps to drive home the message. Our students are making excellent progress but we want this to be just the beginning.’
The next stage of the school’s redevelopment will be a major refurbishment of the classic 1930s block to provide a sixth form centre.
