Fairlawn Primary School Science Workshop
Year 5 students from Fairlawn Primary School visited the Academy yesterday to experience what Science lessons are like in Year 7.
Students enjoyed a Physics lesson based on an investigation into helicopters. They had to test the hypothesis that: “The length of the wings affects how easily a helicopter stays off the ground”. The students were enthusiastic and willingly contributed their ideas during the lesson; they left the lesson expressing how much they enjoyed the experience.
Fairlawn parents were invited after the lesson to join their children; students were eager to demonstrate to their parents what they had learnt. Parents were able to get involved in the investigation and gain useful insight into Science lessons at secondary school. One parent was particularly impressed with “the hands-on nature of the session” leaving the workshop stating “I learnt something too”!
Tom Grocott, Head of Science, said “it is refreshing to see parents take a keen interest in Science”; he hopes to run more sessions like this in the near future.
