Goldsmiths University Outreach Day
Twenty Four students from Year 9 spent the day at Goldsmiths University recently to take part in an outreach day that aims to raise aspiration among the students.
The first session of the day was called ‘What is university?’ and the students were given an introductory presentation about the reasons why people attend and don’t attend university.
They created a presentation about different courses, including the structure, entry requirements and assessments. They then planned and created an advert for their chosen course at university. Four student ambassadors who study at Goldsmiths were there to help the students and give a true personal insight into the interactive sessions.
Campus tour
After a delicious lunch provided by the university, they were taken on an extensive tour of the campus including lecture halls, seminar rooms, fitness suits, accommodation and laboratory facilities.
In the afternoon, the group spent time in a lecture theatre for an academic business session run by one of the Business Course Directors at Goldsmiths.
The students were asked to create a new digital technology to solve a specific issue in society today. They were encouraged to think about their target audience, idea development and the market for their product. This provided our students with the fundamental knowledge and expertise they would need to progress forward in a business-related career in the future. The students were split into small groups to work on their project and were asked to present to the group in a ‘Dragons Den’ scenario at the end.
Overall the feedback from students was very positive and they enjoyed having a first-hand insight and experience into what University life in London is really like.
Latisha Woods said: “The day went really well and I love what university has to offer.” Zaneisha Johnson Watkis added: “I enjoyed my day out at Goldsmiths University. I will really consider going to university one day.”
