Read All About It! News Journalists Inspire Students
English and Media students had the opportunity to meet two journalists from News UK on Wednesday.
Farzana Ali (left), Fabulous Lifestyle Editor from The Sun, and Rozalind Dineen (right), Fiction Editor from the Times Literary Supplement gave a presentation on their jobs, organisations and the press-news industry as a whole.
They spoke to year 11 and 13 students about the education and career choices they had made. They then went on to describe a typical day of work as well as some of the more extraordinary advice they had from experience; like always have your passport with you in case your editor needs to send someone to an exotic location at short notice.
There was a presentation about how our students could get involved with the News Academy program which runs over the summer, and some of our girls signed up straight after the talk.
Fantastic advice
It was really valuable to hear two very accomplished female journalists talking about their careers and a fantastic piece of advice came from Rozalind who pointed out that far too many women used the word ‘sorry’ when submitting their writing. She told us that we should just send out our work and wait for acknowledgment without apologising.
The Q&A was a fantastic way to ask candid questions about journalism with insights into pay, how to build a portfolio and what celebrities Farzana had interviewed!
Both ladies were very impressed by the school bookshop, Tales On the Rye, and we hope Rozalind, who is a local, will be back for its official opening.
