War Horse - Students Catch One of the Last London Performances
Year 7 and 8 students caught one of the last performances of the acclaimed show War Horse before it closes at the end of this month.
With a bit of time to kill in Covent Garden, where we watched some of the street performers, we made our way to the New London Theatre for a mid-week matinee.
The story of Joey, a horse bought in a bet, who is raised by a young boy, Albert is a touching story of friendship and determination. Joey is sold to the army at the break-out of the First World War and gets shipped to the North of France unbeknownst to his young trainer. Albert signs-up to the war effort in a bid to be reunited with his friend and both experience the deep traumas of combat.
Some of our students will have studied the Michael Morpurgo book as part of the ‘Bildungsroman’ or coming-of-age stories in their English curriculum.
Students were enthralled by the puppetry, created by Handspring in collaboration with the National Theatre. Joey and Topthorn remain the stars of the show and it’s difficult not to believe there are real horses cantering around the stage.
