Year 7 Introduced to Roman London

Museum of London 1

Year 7 history students were invited to an “Introducing Roman London” workshop at the Museum of London recently.

On arrival we met with our host for the day who escorted us to our first workshop in the conference room. This session involved ‘object handling and traditional clothing’, which focused on different aspects of Roman life and the process of Romanisation. It involved an opportunity for a hands-on experience of real life Roman artefacts. Each group was challenged to guess what each object was made of and what they thought it was used for during the Roman times.

Three students (pictured) volunteered to model the replica Roman costumes to give the group a visual experience of what clothing was traditionally like during Roman times.

After lunch we had booked out the Roman London Gallery to explore the artefacts and objects stored in the museum and we observed different time periods including ‘Medieval London’, ‘War, Plague and Fire’ and ‘Expanding City’ galleries.

We finished the day in a drama workshop to hear the tale of Boudicca’s famous resistance to Roman occupation in an interactive storytelling performance and then created rousing speeches to rally armies on both sides into action. The students were split into two groups Romans vs. Britain’s and were encouraged to use exuberant actions and expressive language to portray their side of the story.

The students all thoroughly enjoyed their Roman London experience and not only developed their understanding of Roman life, but also applied learning to a practical interactive environment within the Museum of London.
