Science Week Brings Lab to Life
Science Week kicked off with an assembly on chickens and students got the chance to listen to a presentation about the birds and had the opportunity to handle them too. Students thoroughly enjoyed it, as this picture shows!
Then we had a very informative careers afternoon with nurse Anita Sarkodie who works as a school nurse in Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Anita trained at King's College and has worked as a nurse on the ward in three different hospitals.
Research scientist
Students also met research scientist Curtis Asante, who completed an undergraduate master’s degree in pharmacology at the University of Bath and then went on to complete a PhD in neuropharmacology at University College London. His research focused on how the brain and spinal cord are involved in movement.
And we also spoke with science researcher Ariana Mirzarafie who is a first year PhD student on an interdisciplinary biosciences course at UCL and King's College London, and has spent time doing varied research including 3D printing organs, programming and analysing biological processes, genetic engineering, and analysing E. coli protein properties.
What students said
Student Imani Charlery, Year 8, said: “I found it most useful that we were able to ask all of them questions." Julie Voong said: “I found learning about the subjects they studied to achieve their goals most useful."
We also had a science quiz with three winners from Year 8 so congratulations to:
-
Amazon Green, Year 8 – Manchester House
-
Eden Bradshaw, Year 8 – King's House
-
Emma Breatcliffe, Year 8 - Imperial House
To round up the week students were engaged in various science experiments and even the Design and Technology department got involved and did an experiment using yeast.
It was a fun packed week roll on Science week 2017!!
