Students dare to dance
Student Eugenie MacDonald reports on Dare 2 Dance Empowerment Day at Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre, which some students from the academy attended on Friday 4 March.
The day consisted of learning different styles of street dance, which included House, Locking, popping and many more, taught by different members of dance groups from all around London. These groups included, Unity Youth, Myself, Retaliation, Esteem, Stealth and many more.
Everyone got free D2D t-shirts, and we got introduced to the dancers and teachers. We all got taught exciting dance routines, and after each style we learnt, we performed back to the other students. We all got told and showed the history of dance, by the dance teachers and students acting, dancing and demonstrating how dance evolved.
At the end we had the chance to ask questions to the dancers. How they got into dance? Who inspires you? At what age did you first start dancing? It was great that we found out how they all got to where they are now, and what they also do apart from dancing. We also got given leaflets about dance clubs and classes that we could attend to.
A student from year 10, Ruby Simon, says “It was a good experience because we learnt the history of dance, different dance styles and we also got to work in groups with people who came from different schools.” Overall this event was great, and we all learnt something new and exciting.
