Scientists in sport
Ten lucky Year 9 students from HGAED were picked to travel to Kings College London for a day devoted to the Science of Sport.
They were introduced to behind the scenes anti-doping technology and even got to test urine samples for the presence of performance-enhancing drugs. Luckily for them, the urine was not real, but they heard from the scientists who do this for real.
They also tried out techniques used by physiotherapists when treating injuries and joined a debate about whether we should ban performance-enhancing drugs in sport.
The highlight of the day, however, was hearing an inspirational speech from Graham Edmunds, twice gold medallist in the Paralympic games of 2004 and 2008. Graham spoke of the injury that had led him to become a Paralympian, the perserverence and determination he had to succeed and his ambition to win his third gold in 2012.
