Girls Compete to Row the Queen's Barge
Thirteen of our girls took part in the Gloriana Achievers Regatta on 4 October and did absolutely brilliantly, coming joint second overall with Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich for their time trial and side by side races.
The regatta sees crews competing for the ultimate prize of rowing Gloriana, The Queen’s Row Barge (pictured). Students spent the morning learning how to row and then took part in The Gloriana Achievers’ Regatta afterwards. “I was so impressed with how our girls worked as a team and took on the challenge of rowing – where working together is so important,” said Ms Thomson.
Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich was one of five schools from the Harris Federation selected to take part this year, in recognition of being named a top performing school by the Department of Education. The other four were Harris Academy Battersea, Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley, Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich and Harris Academy Chafford Hundred.
“The boys narrowly beat us in the side by side race which meant that they got to row the Gloriana at the end of the day with Chafford Hundred. A lot of the girls were very tired the following day and had some beautiful blisters to show for all their hard work yesterday!" said Ms Thomson.
This was a great opportunity and a fantastic effort by all 13 girls. We’re proud of you!
