ARTiculation Prize - Public Speaking Workshop
ARTicultaion is a national public speaking competition that is now run by the National Gallery London.
Young people between 16-19 years old are invited to each deliver a 10-minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, architecture, or an artefact of their choice. After an in-school heat, one student is selected to represent their school at regional heats or regional finals which take place at museums and galleries across the country.
Discovery day at Drapers Hall
To support students in developing their research skills, and importantly their public speaking skills before the in-school heats, the ARTicultation team offer a ‘Discovery Day’ free of charge to state schools.
Discovery Days take place at local and national museums and are a workshop-based session where students meet and work with young people from other schools to research a specific art work from the collection.
In small groups students must work together to create a presentation on their given artwork and present their findings at the end of the session to an audience.
This year we were fortunate to be hosted by Drapers Hall, once the Drapers guild headquarters and originally Thomas Cromwell’s house. The grandeur of the building and the multiple art works that adorned the walls, provided fertile ground for the students to learn about the research process and to build confidence and practice their public speaking skills.
Clear and concise speech
It is a scary experience for many of our young people to stand up in front of an audience and deliver a clear and concise speech and this day is a brilliant opportunity for all students to help them to gain experience and build confidence in their oracy skills.
This not only helps them across all their studies in school but also provides a solid foundation upon which they can build as they move forward into university or work life. It is a wonderful experience to see students bloom in front of your eyes as they realise that they have conquered one of their fears.
We send a huge congratulations to Rabtha, Moshood, Ling, Yezi, Natasha and Serena who all delivered an excellent speech during this event.
