Othello study day
Some of the UK’s leading experts on Othello took part in a recent A Level study day at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich.
Dr Lucy Munro, King’s College London, talked about how the play was a product of Elizabethan London, and what it revealed about attitudes to national, racial and religious difference in Shakespeare’s time.
Dr Alison Shell, University College London, looked in detail at Shakespeare’s use of language, while Professor Tiffany Stern, University of Oxford, focused on what we know about the play as it was first staged.
Professor Robert Gordon, Goldsmiths University, focused on a history of performances of Othello from the eighteenth-century up to the present day, including Laurence Olivier’s infamous performance in the 1960s, through to recent productions at the National Theatre.
Deeper understanding
“Learning from some of the country’s leading experts on Shakespeare deepens our students’ understanding of the play and really supports their studies,” said Chris Brown, Head of English.
“It also shows students how exciting university teaching can be and inspires them to take their studies to the next level.”
Students say...
“Professor Stern made the topic very interesting, especially the section about Iago speaking prose when he was being deceitful and verse when he was himself – I will definitely use that!” Ruth Sandi, student.
