King Lear Study Day for Post 16
Students had a Shakespearean Tragedy conference on Monday 12 October, with lectures and workshops lead by university academics.
Students were given insights into ‘Women in King Lear’ in a lecture by Dr Kingsley-Smith of the University of Roehampton. This was followed by lecture and workshop on Shakespeare and Playing Conditions.
The day was rounded off with a lecture from Professor Tiffany Sterne of Oxford University who inspired students to look at staging, and sources of the play.
In a fascinating lecture she explored the early ‘Historie of Othello’ and the later ‘Tragedy of Othello’ taking facsimile pages and comparing the variations and considering the use of ‘Historie’ and the connotations for James I with the now common ‘Tragedy’. This prompted discussion at the end and will undoubtedly lead to further debate as students work on their coursework.
