Professor Stanley Wells Talks to Students about Shakespeare's Sonnets
Our Oxbridge Group, for Post 16 students aiming for top universities, went to hear Professor Stanley Wells, one of the world's foremost Shakespeare scholars, talk at Goldsmiths University recently.
He gave a lecture entitled 'My Name is Will: Shakespeare's Sonnets and Autobiography’ which was a really interesting reading of the sonnet ‘collection’ (we learnt we shouldn’t say sequence as they are rather randomly collected).
His studies and research gave insight into reading theses sonnets as personal rather than public expressions and therefore a glimpse into his life. We will be following this up with a discussion group to follow up some of the suggested reading.
Professor Wells is a Life Trustee and former Chairman of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (1991-2011), Emeritus Professor of Shakespeare Studies of the University of Birmingham, and Honorary Emeritus Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, of which he was for many years Vice-Chairman.
