Artist Jackie Brown Creates Exhibition at our School
The first exhibition in our new ID Gallery opens on Thursday 14 January with an installation by local sculptor Jackie Brown (pictured).
Jackie's installation is inspired by sculptor Barbara Hepworth and recreates some of her forms, especially her stone moons, using hair.
"The ID gallery is about exploring identity so using pieces made from hair is very relevant because hair is important to people's identity," explains Jackie.
"I am fascinated by Hepworth's forms and my aim was to transcribe her stone pieces using completely different material," says Jackie, who has also previously made garments woven from hair.
"Art education and the wider world"
The idea behind the gallery is to give students the chance to work with practicing artists and bridge the gap between art education and the wider world, explains Teacher of Art, Jose Campos (pictured with Jackie at the entrance to one of the two gallery spaces).
"What I love about Jackie's work is that her materials are very unconventional and will disrupt our students expectations of what art can be, but they are also very accessible because you're curious about what Jackie is doing."
As well as creating the installation, Jackie will be leading talks and discussions with students. "I'll be fascinated to hear their views and look forward to having the chance to complement the art curriculum," she says.
