Tosca at Royal Opera House Gives Students a Night to Remember
Students gripped by plot and performance which ended with rapturous applause.
Year 10 Harris Experience students watched a performance of Tosca at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden last week.
The thrilling melodrama by Guacomo Puccini is in three acts and tells the story of the opera singer, Tosca, and her lover, Cavaradossi, escaping the tyrannical Chief of Police, Scarpia.
As part of the Taylor Family Schools’ Matinees at the Opera House, we were also fortunate enough to watch the scene change between Act I and Act II. The technical team left the curtain up while the massive pieces of set were manoeuvred about during the first interval.
The sound of a full orchestra was a treat, after becoming accustomed to so much digital music and the power of the singers performing without microphones was remarkable. Not to mention the sumptuous surroundings!
This was a brilliant introduction to the opera for those who had not been before. I hope the girls will get many more opportunities to go in the future.
